The 1st Battalion, Mysore Infantry served in airfield security duties during the Battle of Kota Bahru as part of the 8th Indian Infantry Brigade. With the collapse of the defences in Kota Bahru, the Battalion was withdrawn to Singapore and was joined with the 1st Malaya Infantry Brigade on 18 December 1941. The 1st Malaya Infantry Brigade was a regular infantry brigade formed in 1939 with its headquarters in Singapore immediately after the outbreak of hostilities in Europe. The Brigade participated in the Battle of Singapore against the Japanese until the surrender of the garrison in February 1942.



On 18 December 1972, a minor earth tremor at 10.10 pm shook houses in Beach Road and Katong.



The Great Singapore Workout was launched by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 3 October 1993 after he led a 3 km walk-and-jog session from the National Stadium to the Padang to mark the inaugural Healthy Lifestyle Day and the start of its month-long campaign. Attended by 26,107 participants, the 15-minute workout session at the Padang was later inscribed in the Guinness Book of Records on 18 December 1993 as the largest mass aerobic session held at one location.




Ying Fo Fui Kun was the first Hakka Clan Association founded in 1822 by Hakkas from Jiayingzhou prefecture. In 1905, influenced by educational reforms in China, the association set up Ying Sin School, one of the first modern Chinese schools in Singapore. Built in 1843-44, the eclectic style two-storey building has a small open-air courtyard. This building was gazetted for preservation as a national monument on 18 December 1998.




The Old Hill Street Police Station building was gazetted as a national monument on 18 December 1998.
